For the fifth year, Scottish Beauty will host the annual Scottish Nail Technician of the Year competition, sponsored by Creative Nail Design.

The competition is split into three sections, and comprises 10 categories in total taking place over one day – Sunday 11th May at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh.

Top Techs

Top Techs is the competition we all know and love, where in two hours 30 minutes a technician puts their skills to the test. Using wraps, liquid or powder, gels or nail art – the judges are looking for ultimate perfection in each category. Top Tech categories are open to any fully qualified nail technicians. Top Tech Newcomers category open to any fully qualified nail technicians who have not previously entered a professional nail competition.

In this competition the judges are not looking for a salon nail but are testing your skills for perfecting the shape, balance, colour, smile line, thickness, product control and C curve so that if you took a photo of the finished article, perfection would radiate from every contour.

Top Tech will showcase the crème de la crème of skilled technicians fighting for the title of top technician in the country.

Take your skills to the next level and prove it on the circuit.

Salon Nail Challenge

Salon Nail Challenge is a competition that shows of technician salon skills. You have one hour and thirty minutes to achieve a fantastic set of salon nails using any system.

This competition is an introduction into competition at salon level. The judges are marking to the same criteria as the Top Techs but at a salon level.

We would not expect Salon Nail Challenge nails to be as thin as Top Tech nails, in fact this would lose marks as these nails would be unsuitable for clients as they would not be durable. The C Curve would not be as deep as pinching would not be the day-to-day requirement.

The beauty of this category is that you can use gel finisher on acrylics plus oil, base coats and top coats and polish dryers; anything goes that you would use in a salon to achieve your required look.

Your first challenge is to be selected into the Top 10. Only the top ten will receive a score sheet with detailed scoring.

Salon Nail Art Challenge

This is a new category that is all about permanent nail art using coloured acrylics, gels and glitters etc. You can use skills of encapsulation, 3D or any others but remember that your finished entry has to be deemed as commercially wearable.

In one hour and thirty minutes both hands need to be completed and all ten nails must have designs on them. The criteria will be marked on skill, wearability, balance and shape, finish, shine, shape complexity and overall look. Oils and gel finishers can be used in this category.

Show us what your clients are wearing and what you can do in 1 hour and 30 minutes. Your model should not wear a costume; your client would not wear one so don’t bring one.

Your first challenge is to be selected into the Top 10. Only the top ten will receive a score sheet with detailed scoring.

Student Nail Challenge

The same as the Salon Nail Challenge, but for undergraduates. Ask your college to nominate you.
